Garfield Heights basketball standout Tony Farmer sentenced to 3 years in prison for kidnapping and assault

By Peter Krouse, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Garfield Heights High School basketball star Tony Farmer is going to jail.

Farmer, sentenced to three years in prison this afternoon by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Pamela for the kidnapping and assault of his ex-girlfriend.

Farmer, 18, turned to his attorney after the sentence was announced, collapsed backwards into the arms of a sheriff''s deputy and sank to the floor.

The judge said she will review the sentence after 180 days.
Attorney Joe Dubyak, who represents Farmer, had said prior to court today that he would for probation, but Assistant County Prosecutor Sanjeev Bhasker believes the judge will make Farmer spend time in prison.

Farmer was indicted by a grand jury on charges of kidnapping, felonious assault and robbery stemming from an altercation last April with his ex-girlfriend, Andrea Lane, in the lobby and parking lot of her apartment complex in Bedford Heights.

Much of the incident was caught on videotape inside the apartment building. Bhasker said that at one point, outside the building, Farmer dragged Lane by her hair.

Farmer was later charged with intimidation, as well, after he sent threatening phone and text messages to Lane.

This article includes a video (that I can't embed) with surveillance footage from the apartment complex where the assault occured, I also like what the judge had to say..

Surveillance Captures Violent Attack by Farmer
by Jack Shea

CLEVELAND — Tony Farmer’s talent on the basketball court made the Garfield Heights High School senior one of the top college recruits in the country.

But Farmer may have forfeited a scholarship and his future, when he attacked his ex-girlfriend in her apartment building in Bedford Heights on April 23rd.

Surveillance video, obtained by the Fox 8 I-Team, shows Farmer striking 18-year-old Andrea Lane in the head, and then continuing to strike and kick her as she cowered in a corner and pleaded for him to stop. But police say he then dragged her outside by the hair and continued to assault her.

Then, when she tried to get back inside the apartment building, he attacked her again, tried to pull her outside and later kicked her in the head four times.

In court on Tuesday Lane said, “I don’t know what was wrong with him that day, I mean I know he was a good person, I hope he still is, I hope he learns from this.”

Farmer collapsed in the courtroom on Tuesday, after Judge Pamela Barker sentenced him to three years in prison on charges that include kidnapping and felonious assault.

In an interview with the I-Team, Barker says she was not swayed by supporters of Farmer who asked that she be lenient so that he could pursue a basketball scholarship, or even the victim’s request that he not be sent to prison.

Barker told Fox 8, “There’s nothing in the sentencing guidelines that talks about him being a basketball star, and being able to go forward, when obviously she’s been very traumatized by this whole situation.”

The judge says she also concluded Farmer was not remorseful after his initial arrest, because he later attempted to intimidate by the victim by sending her a series of text and phone messages.

“He certainly threatened her or said that he should have done something more to her and so that in addition to what I saw on the tape was very telling to me and it was a violation of the ‘no contact’ order that was put in place to protect her,” Barker said.

And as Farmer heads to prison, the judge says he only has himself to blame for the cloud that now hangs over his once bright future.

“The opportunities that were lost, I would just say that he lost them,” said Barker.
amen to that!

Judge Details Farmer Assault Video in Court

by Lindsay Buckingham and Stacey Frey

CLEVELAND — One of the nation’s top basketball recruits collapsed in the courtroom Tuesday after finding out he’d be heading to prison instead of back to the basketball court.

FOX 8 cameras were rolling for the emotional pleas for mercy, including words offered by the victim.

Tony Farmer was a standout at Garfield Heights and considered a superstar in the making, one of the country’s top 100 recruits. Major colleges came knocking on his door when he was in the 10th grade.

Farmer fell to the court floor when a Cuyahoga County judge sentenced him to three years in prison for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Andrea Lane.

There is video of Farmer assaulting Lane, dragging her by the hair and striking her as she cowered in a corner at a Bedford Heights apartment building.

Judge Pamela Barker said of the video: “Lane is literally cowering in a corner and she is trying to push him away from her. And ultimately, then, he, hits her in the head several times as she is cowered in that corner. That’s what the court witnessed on those videotapes, and that does not incorporate, as far as I understand, is all that took place because this was within the confines of the apartment complex.
