U.S. ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens killed in attack . GRAPHIC
#35
Friday, Libyans protested the killings at the Embassy - holding the rogue Libyan militia at least partly responsible. The militia groups are described in some articles as armed Islamic extremists that are not part of Libya's National Army and had reportedly been kept at bay by Gadhafi during his rule. Some of those detained in connection with the killings include members of Ansar al Sharia.

The backlash against Libyan militias was massive, according to the Associated Press, which reported that tens of thousands rallied against armed militias in Benghazi before hundreds took on the Ansar al Sharia compound.

The Islamist group has been accused of involvement in the attack last week that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, a charge that it denies. Banners at the protests paid tribute to Stevens as marchers chanted slogans against extremism and the armed militias that wield power in Libya.

Lots of fragmentation and unrest. So far, looks like some of the militia groups have heeded the National Army's demand that they removed themselves from stations at former governmental buildings within 48 hours.
