French toast is one of my favorites! I learned that the trick is to use stale bread. I buy a french loaf or sourdough and set it out a day or so in advance. Sometimes when you use fresh bread, it gets soggy or breaks while you're trying to dip it in the egg mixture. The stale bread gives you that nice crispy edge and it's cooked throughout. I use fresh ground nutmeg(an absolute must), almond extract(or vanilla) ,a tiny dash of salt and pepper(gives it a little kick), cinnamon,milk and eggs. After the maple syrup I sprinkle a bunch of powdered sugar on top. It's not something I have often, because it's almost like eating a big doughnut.
