Personally, I think that Dr. George Hodel is the most likely suspect, due to the precision required to sever Betty's torso so cleanly, and the fact that he was a well-connected, influential and deeply twisted "player" back in 47. The crime scene photos break my heart.
Some theorists believe that whoever killed Betty may have killed before and become more brazen; working up to his finale with Betty - leaving her body carefully posed for public display/adulation.

Agreed - something about this crime scene is heartbreaking. Maybe the fact that she symbolizes the typical aspiring actress of the times and the ultimate ill fate that could become of chasing that dream.
