I remember using that line on my husband once when, early in our dating, we briefly broke up. He was like "I don't need any more friends, thanks anyway".

Ha ha ha - same thing for me. I said I think we should just be friends and he said "fuck that, I don't even like the friends I have now - it's all or nothing". I responded "then, it's nothing" and yet I find myself back at "all". Meh.....
