I suspect they waived that hearing because the defense attorney calculated his odds.
Given the publicity and political pressure, what are the odds that a SYG hearing would go his way? Just about zero is my guess... what judge is going to find in his favor in this charged up environment? They would certainly defer and let it go to trial, erring on the side of caution. So losing the SYG hearing would put a serious taint on Zimmerman going into trial. The prosecution would mention at every chance how the SYG hearing didn't go his way.
So my opinion is that the defense decided to take their chances at trial, with no SYG hearing to muddy it up.
