Not true. Many species of animal who don't have so called “higher thinking” are 100% monogamous to one partner throughout their lives.
Gibbons, swans, wolves, and many other species mate exclusively for life.
Gibbons are also the only primate who exclusively walk on two legs on the ground like humans.
I know but for humans, I do attribute our monogamy to higher thinking for the most part. Hell, look at the divorce rate. We choose to be monogamous or not.
ETA: Thank God. I'd hate to think of being forever bound to the first guy I slept with.
