The intended use of a item is irrelevant. What matters is how a individual actually uses that item. That tired old its not its intended function excuse don't hunt.
A knife was also designed as a weapon and has ben for centuries [being a ninja I would have thought you would have known that]. Edged weapons have ben in use for battle far longer than firearms ever thought of being. Some knifes are designed for fighting and some are designed for eating. Just like firearms.
