It was a cult
Looks like two of the alleged slaves joined The Workers’ Institute of Marxism Leninism Mao Zedong Thought all those years ago and were willing members of the community (for at least some period of time).
The youngest of the alleged slaves is, however, believed to be the daughter of another cult member who mysteriously died from a fall out of the bathroom window of the cult's compound. That woman's family was told by the cult that the woman (Sian) had gone traveling in India.
