Saying the "c" word and being an asshole is perfectly fine. You interpreted the welcome message right. In fact, the logo, at one point in its animation, indicates that assholes thrive well here.
You were being tortured. Sometimes Sinister likes to aggravate newbies and lock their threads. It's another form of testing them perhaps, and it is sometimes needed to make sure they aren't TOO dumb.
