I think that he realised that he was being outed and he was overwhelmed by the truth coming out and he fatally self harmed. He probably thought his life as he knew it was over and couldn't face the alternative. The truth is, it probably would not have been as bad as he thought, he would have gotten through it. If it's true, it is a truly despicable act.
