THE EVIDENCE AND THE PROSECUTION'S CASE
There is no doubt that Magnotta killed and defiled the body of Jun Lin. It's on videotape and Magnotta has confessed.
The prosecution's job in this case is to convince the Canadian jury that Magnotta knew exactly what he was doing and should be held criminally responsible.
Today in court, three crime scene technicians testified about the evidence found in Magnotta's apartment, including evidence that he used bleach to try to rid the mattress of blood stains and undertook a methodical clean-up process after the killing. There had been blood through the apartment.
Magnotta had also bagged and rid his apartment of Lin's belongings and moved them to the street near the garbage. The bags included items of clothing like a salmon-colored golf shirt, white-and-blue checkered pants, a green sweater and black underwear, as well as bank statements, passes for the subway in London and more sinister materials such as two black-handled steak knives, a pair of scissors, two screwdrivers, a hammer and a circular hand saw.
The prosecution contends that these are deliberate and knowing acts; acts which conflict with Magnotta's claim of not being responsible and also conflict with the raving notes he sent with packages containing Lin's body parts.
One package, addressed to the federal Liberal party headquarters, with the sender’s name and address given as Bordelais of Montreal, includes a note handwritten in marker on a piece of pink paper apparently appealing to Laureen Teskey, the wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “You know who they are,” the note says. “They f----- me big time.”
Another box, sent to Vancouver’s False Creek Elementary School, was sent in the name of “L. Valentini” of St. Catharines, Ont. Again on pink paper is the threatening poem: “Roses are red, violets are blue. The police will need dental records to identify you. Bitch.”
