The former Marine and Marine reservist was diagnosed with PTSD by medical professionals in the US before he entered Mexico. He was diagnosed again with PTSD while in Mexico. I think everything that should be done to confirm the legitimacy of the claimed illness has been done.
Mexico doesn't have the medical professionals to treat PTSD so the Mexican judge ordered Tahmooressi released to the US for medical attention. However, the judge made clear that he was not going to sacrifice the Mexican judicial process because of political pressure and there was no ruling made regarding the weapons charges -- they have not been dropped and that matter is being evaluated, AFAIK.
The politicians who petitioned the Mexican government and judiciaries for Tahmooressi's release weren't obligated to do that, I agree. But, there's nothing wrong with them having done so and it's not unheard of between countries. Some of the veterans' advocates and politicians likely acted out of genuine concern for the best interest of a sick man who had served his country. Others may have advocated for him because it benefits them politically. Either way, I'm glad they did and hope Tahmooressi is able to be treated effectively, whether he winds up having to face weapons charges down the line or not.
