Depressing.
Two sisters, aged 15 and 11, shot their 16-year-old brother to death in White Springs, Florida last night.
The children's parents — Keith Kornegay, 37, and Misty Kornegay, 33 — were away for the night. They were arrested Tuesday, charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm and are accused of failing to properly supervise their children.
The older girl says her brother, Damien Kornegay, beat her and that she was locked in her room with just a bucket for urination. She says her little sister let her out of her room when her brother went to sleep, got the guns, and then the older girl shot her brother in his sleep.
The girls are in detention. Children arrested for crimes and treated as juveniles can be held in detention for a maximum of 30 days under Florida law. A 3-year-old was in the home at the time of the murder; relation unknown.
The Police say they had been to the family's residence on three previous occasions for reports of property damage, a civil matter and a juvenile issue, which was turned over to DCF and was "unfounded."
The two girls appeared in court Wednesday for a detention hearing and were ordered detained for the next 30 days, during which time the state attorney will make a determination as to whether they will be charged as juveniles or adults. One of the girls is being held in a detention center in Ocala while the other is being held in Gainsville.
