There are an amazing number of ways to get leverage on someone without them being able to do a hell of a lot to escape. Whether you have guns in your house or not, an intruder is at a disadvantage unless you panic simply because it's your space and you know it well. You know where the sharp things are, the heavy things...the mistake people make with guns is relying too heavily on them for protection when there are infinite options. I have a couple dozen heavy blunt items within easy reach of just about any room in my house, along with the standards. Some are throwable, some for hitting, some will make stabby. And if I get close enough, somebody is getting choked out. Right after I fishhook his eyeball.
