In reality my house is not the type or location that someone would choose to break into. The house is an open floor plan and there is nowhere to sneak in quietly, my drive way looks like a parking lot with all my husbands work trucks, the dogs would be barking like crazy, the alarm would go off and chances are one of the nosey neighbors on this little cul-de-sac would see or hear something.

Alarms, signs, cameras and some awareness tends to prevent such things. Don't be a soft target

In reality, I think this ^ is the key. If you make your next door neighbours look like easier targets, chances are you'll be left alone.
