Interesting case, Donovan.
Speculation is highly encouraged here; debating differences of opinion welcomed too. The only rule that LC established for the crime forum in regard to speculation and opinions is that they be labeled as such.
^Charlie Tan, 19, is a popular kid and reportedly has an incredible amount of support in the community. Within a couple of days, $50,000 was raised by his supporters for his defense costs via an on-line campaign and a large group gathered at the courthouse to show their support.
He was indicted for second degree murder and the prosecutor said that the grand jury saw evidence indicating that Jim (Liang) Tan died sometime between Feb. 5th and Feb. 9th (the 9th is the night 911 was called to the house to report him dead).
Police contend that they had made a visit to the home in response to a call on Feb. 5th and that Jim Tan could have been dead then (they aren't saying who called, nor detailing the nature of the call).
It will be interesting to find out the estimated time of death from the Medical Examiner. If Charlie Tan was at Cornell at that time, mom's gonna be in trouble (the Tans' other son lives in Colorado).
Based on interviews with friends and neighbors, it seems as though Jim Tan was the one doing the abusing in the home. I could easily see either Charlie or his mom getting off with self defense, IF it turns out Jim's estimated time of death was on or about the 9th.
