I'm not typically (except with close friends/family--we hug). I met a woman a couple of months ago in a memorial service atmosphere. My first inclination was to put out my hand and shake but we'd been talking for several minutes prior and were sort of sharing sympathies/memories so under the circumstances, when we finally got around to sharing names, I went in for a hug. She basically said "I get really uncomfortable when people do that".
Alrightee then. I actually appreciated her candor and it didn't bug me a bit but I'll probably go back to just hand shaking from now on (although usually I can trust my instincts and/or the other person makes the first move--either coming in for a hug or with a hand out).
I felt HotD up and down as much as I could when we met though.
