I only need glasses for reading small print. Oddly, as I get older the print seems to keep getting smaller. It's a conspiracy, I think.
Anyway, I have a bunch of cheap plastic-handled magnifying glasses tucked around the house and in the garage for reading product labels and instructions and such. They were like $5 each at Big Lots in the kid's toy section, but they do just what I need and I never have to stress about losing them or breaking them or anything. I guess that makes me gauche too.
Gaucheness aside, my low-cost vision aids also have valuable side benefits. For example, say I was out front one morning enjoying the summer sun whilst tending to my flower bed, when.........all of a sudden....... a gang of rolly-pollys started creeping towards my toes with ill-intent. I wouldn't freak out or anything. I really wouldn't. I have peace of mind in knowing that I could grab one of my handy-dandy magnifying glasses, calmly plant my ass on the sidewalk, and burn those menacing little bastards to death before nightfall (if the ultra-violet rays were strong enough that day and I had enough sunscreen on).
Which makes my $5 investment not only a highly functional one, but a multi-functional one.
