Sometimes I like to find the old sites and see whats there now. Sometimes they are covered with a mall parking lot but sometimes I get lucky and find one that's overgrown and away from development. I never find anything but just like walking around and looking.
There's a big lake just west of Minneapolis called Lake Minnetonka.
It was discovered in 1822 by the son of the Commander of Fort Snelling at the time. I think I read the son was 17 or so, and he was accompanied by another person.
I'd love to be able to take a time machine and go back to 1822, paddling a canoe up Minnehaha creek (right next to the Fort), through Indian territory and come out into the lake.
I can't imagine the adrenaline rush of being alone in wilderness like that and not knowing what's next.
The north shore of Lake Minnetonka was a sacred Sioux burial ground at the time.
How those two survived and were able to return is pretty remarkable.
