I think the whole trend of deinstituzionalizing the seriously mentally ill has at least somewhat contributed to the problem. If you're the parent of a fucked up adult, I think it's extremely difficult to get them (forcibly if needed) the appropriate level of care.

I also think the Internet has contributed. When I read that thread where the guy was encouraged to commit these murders...that support (so to speak) didn't exist 30 years ago. Not to mention the ability to stoke one's ego being online infamous.
