Yeah, it's gonna cost a fortune to try this case. No doubt about it. On top of that, there's the cost of his incarceration before, during, and after the trial. Plus, it will cost more $$$$ to go through the automatic appeals process if he's convicted of capital murder. All tolled, it's a multi-million dollar price tag.
Dylann Roof, of course, deserves due process under the law, even though he's a piece of shit and whether or not he killed the nine church members is not in dispute.
While I don't care if he lives or dies, I've really grown colder about the death penalty over the last few years considering the cost of it and other factors discussed previously.
I'd rather have seen Roof plead guilty in exchange for 9 life sentences and no trial. In this case, the victims' family members likely would have been agreeable to that. Many of them are very devout and declared that they forgave him within days of his arrest (though they want justice for their loved ones).
I think Roof actually did offer to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence, but the federal prosecutors turned the offer down.
