That's what Trump did, thus the large protests.I believe there's more to it than that (and I think you know this as well, non-citizens for one), but at least we can agree that it's not at all the same by any stretch of the imagination.
The Republican Congress, however, did protest the Obama election by stating their mission to block everything Obama tried to do, no matter what it was, in order to limit him to single 4-year term. Fail.
Trump is lucky that the Democratic Congress is not protesting him in the same way. Top Democratic congresspersons (and Bernie the Independent) have said they'll work with his administration on anything that benefits the people and will oppose him on any attempts to discriminate or violate the constitutional rights of Americans.
Anyway, The 3 Percenters and other Trump supporters were ready to hit the streets in armed protest of a Hillary Clinton victory, according to their own pre-election pledges and organized planning. They were going to protest because they truly believed (and Trump reinforced) that their "second amendment rights were under siege", and that the election was rigged unless Trump won.
And, those rally chanters and pledged protesters who believed Trump's unconstitutional and unwarranted promise to "lock Crooked Hillary up!"........whatta bunch of suckers. I don't hear them objecting to Trump's recently appointed National Security Adviser (Flynn) who openly admits to intentionally illegally sharing classified information with allies because he felt above the law (no investigation or charges filed), nor to Trump considering someone who was convicted of illegally intentionally sharing classified information with his biographer/mistress for personal gain (Petraeus).
Anyway, if John Kasich, or Jeb Bush, or Marco Rubio............had been the Republican nominee and won the election, I think there probably would have been some smaller protests by pro-choice activists and environmental activists. But, I don't believe the protests would have been anywhere near as large or diverse.
It's clear to me that the size and diversity of the protests against Trump were a reflection upon the candidate and his own words and actions. He's already flip-flopped on several of the unconstitutional campaign promises that he used to rile his core supporters during the campaign though............so now the people wait to see what the least popular electoral winner of all time does once he takes office. If he goes back to threatening people's constitutional rights again, expect a lot more warranted protests.
