Yeah, that was interesting to me too, Cars. Normally, the detective who was key to solving a cold case is credited and interviewed.
In this case, he or she isn't mentioned at all and it's almost like that detective's efforts are being minimized by the Yuba County Sheriff. "An investigator with a bit of free time", "an investigator doing a routine check of cold cases"...
I wondered if the detective is someone who normally works undercover, is very media shy, or has disciplinary issues...something like that. It's also possible that LE got a tip from a source they're trying to protect, rather than just hitting the jackpot with a routine look at the cold case 40 years later.
Whoever made it possible, I'm so glad Valerie's and Doris's killers were finally caught.
