I had something similar in my marriage, my ex wife was a packrat and I badgered her into a garage sale/ giveaway. She whined about not knowing what to throw away and I said she should get rid of anything broken, useless or she was sick of looking at.

Next thing I know I'm sitting on the curb with a box of baby toys, a busted toaster oven and a stack of old National Geographics...
Thank god I am oblivious to the opinions of others while caught in the blinding splendor of my own cleverness.
