Alabama Scamma
In 2014, Jennifer Cataldo ^ informed her friends, family and anonymous GoFundMe donors that she had terminal cancer and needed help paying her medical bills.
She also chopped her hair for online photos and solicited donations on Facebook and via email. She claimed that she wanted to use some of the donation money to take her kids to Disneyland before she died.
She was successful in her fund-raising campaign, managing to collect over $264,000 in donations, much of which she spent on opiod pain killers - up to 40 a day.
Cataldo was busted in August and pleaded guilty to fraud. The 37-year-old mother will spend two years in jail and was also ordered to repay about $80,000 in restitution to her victims.
Police say not even her family knew she was pulling a con.
Cataldo says she's really very sorry.
