You are making an assumption that the person wants your help.

I remember living with this "Christian" lady who asked me why I wanted to help this old lady who sat outside our shop everyday. She said, "Is it so you will feel better? So you can say you did something nice?"
My response is, "No, it is because it is the right thing to do"

What person wants to sleep on the street as people are passing by, and cars driving by? Of course they will say they are fine. They are also scared.
The best thing I could do for her because she wouldn't go into a shelter was to sit with her and enjoy a meal with her on the side of the street. And listen to her.
