You can buy bulbs that last much longer today than you could have back in the day Sal, you just have to pay more for today's LEDs and energy-efficient bulbs. The longer life span is not a marketing lie or a moronic opinion. It's just true.
I don't know if the extra cost of those bulbs results in savings over several years or not though. It's possible that I'm paying 5 times more for certain bulbs that ultimately last only last 4 times longer, for example.
For me, it's worth it in any case because I like the convenience of not having to buy bulbs often or having to get up on the ladder and change out bulbs frequently.
ETA: Checked it out -- here's what I found regarding bulb life: LEDs are notable for being extremely long-lasting products. Many LEDs have a rated life of up to 50,000 hours. This is approximately 50 times longer than a typical incandescent, 20-25 times longer than a typical halogen, and 8-10 times longer than a typical CFL.
