I told one of her friends  (a nice girl,  that regularly let's the stepdaughter borrow her car)  that the steps license is expired.   

You did the right thing! I can't help but feel if the step-daughter genuinely cared about her friend she never would have put her in that position. You just don't do things like that to people you profess to be a friend of, you just don't. Had the step-daughter been caught driving her friend's car it could possibly affect her insurance and there's the added cost of getting it out of being impounded as well. That young woman needs to grow the hell up.
