I've used the feature a few times but I never noticed it up close and personal to any houses or apartments. I saw some bikers hanging out in front of a little bar in a small mountain community once, it was kind of cool in a weird way.

I just saw this on Wikipedia about it:

Google Street View displays photos taken from a fleet of Chevrolet Cobalts in United States, Opel Astras in Europe (Vauxhall Astras in the United Kingdom) and Australia, and Toyota Prius cars in Japan. For pedestrian areas, narrow streets or parks alleys that cannot be accessed by car, Google Bikes are used .
