These "tea parties" are protest gatherings and the symbol of unity amongst those participating is to carry a teabag with you. When the "party" reaches it's conclusion, the teabags are sometimes thrown at any politician which may be seen as not sympathetic to the cause.
We don't sit around drinking tea and bitching. We leave that up to you Brits since you're so good at it.
