They require very little care. No need for shoes, just trims. They do not need grain and do very well on grass and hay.
You also do not need to give them such a high protein hay either, just timothy or a timothy mix will suffice.
Stay away from alfalfa and clover hay. Clover in the field is fine.
They will get fat FAST and easily, so avoid grain. You can't tell they're getting fat until you see a thick roll of blubber along the mane area on the neck. Taking the fat OFF the donkey is a near impossible task. Better to keep them lean.
Grooming is tough. They take longer to shed their winter coat, so a good blade or a nice clip with the trimmers in the spring will make it easy on them. They tend to get very long hair in the winter and they can look like woolly beasts!
