Hell yeah poor/no attic insulation can hurt ... I am wondering if you either have a BIG house, or the system just isn't venting enough places, or the right places, to get the air cool enough by the thermostat, making the unit work harder to achieve that temperature by the thermostat. Another factor can be the cost of electricity by you.
Good idea ... something is VERY wrong, assuming you don't have extremely high electricity rates in your area for some reason. Look in your attic, you should see insulation on/in all the flooring. Do you have the sun beaming in the windows? That can cause a big burden as well.
