i also had to be certified in CPR for work. we had a mouthpiece for protection when doing mouth-to-mouth. but only the EMTs carried that around, however we could keep a dam-type thing in with latex gloves pouch.
if doing CPR properly the sternum should not break. unless it's a very fragile elder for example.
