Wow! Leveled the home. That poor family. 

Propane has a very distinct odor, how could they not have smelled it? 

LPG has no odour, naturally, the odour you smell is added to alert you that you have a leak. Unfortunately though, LPG is also heavier than air, so it sinks. If you have a leak is low, and you have an underfloor cavity or basement, quite a bit of propane can accumulate and find an ignition source before anyone is aware.
