Back in October 2010 in NE, we had a freak monster 20 degree wind driven 16 inches of"Wet SNOW" storm! The leaves were still on the branches of the 60 foot high trees on our property, of which every one of them snapped in half due to the heavy wet snow on the branches. What a mess, had to eventually call a tree removal company to remove the debris.
Anyway, the heavy wet snow caused most of the power lines in NE to come down, and we were without power for 4-1/2 days!!! And the windy temps all that times were in the low 20's and single digits at night!
We had thermal pane windows, but the heavy winds still made it cold by them! So I put up blankets over the windows in the rooms we stayed in, it worked. We also had a fireplace, it worked pretty warm in that room also.
We had bottled water to drink, and had a campers propane stove, with two tanks, (worked great) metal coffee pot, 4 oil lanterns, 5 battery lanterns, and 4 flashlights, battery charger, and lots of canned soups, and eggs, hamburger, and other things that cooked quickly. We had the makings for sandwiches. It still was a long 4-1/2 days.
All in all, we fared pretty good considering the situation.
PS: called all hotels in area within 25 to 30 miles that had power, all had no vacancies!
