Did you have a compass in front of you? I've driven ships and they usually have one right there. You stay on the bearing 12 or another deg that gets you there. it is fun and functional. Port/ Starboard gets used. I remember driving a Destroyer a few times. It is fun and deep. They trusted lil ole me.
There is a compass. I don't see the captains using it. We are on a 50 mile lake, while cruising up and back we are never more than 1 mile from shore.
The only times of poor visibility is during a storm/ overcast day or if smoke is covering the lake.
