Apparently baby bottles were promoted back in the Victorian Era. Women thought they were a godsend because it allowed their babies to feed themselves and freed up the mother's time. They were little more than a nipple attached to a long, slender, flexible tube of various lengths then attached to the bottle. During this period there were older women who wrote books to help young women with their new households and offered guidance on managing their homes, their servants, arranging flowers, etc., things of that nature. One of the topics covered were the baby bottles. New mothers were told the nipples & tubes only needed to be cleaned every 2-3 weeks. Hear me heave. At the time this was killing 8 out of 10 kids!
