Are you just assuming that the parents didn't already know about the kid's gender issues? Perhaps they do know and don't approve of it until the kid is an adult and can make that life changing decision with an adult mind? What is it anyone's business except for the parent's?

If the parents knew about it they should have been in touch with the school and teacher and said “even though Jenny wants to be called Joe, we want you to call HER Jenny, no matter how ugly it gets for her”.

Then if the teacher had disregarded those wishes I suppose firing them would be appropriate.
