I actually relate to this somewhat.
The role i am doing is a bit of a combination of roles. Bits of different roles. I created it because it looked interesting, i could do it as well or better than others, and there were a few holes that needed filling. I am given a lot of free reign to do it and i like it, because it is interesting. Enough variety, enough responsibility, and enough to keep my mind clicking over.
But days like today drain me.
When there are panicked colleagues with angry clients i am the escalation guy, when other departments are copping friction i play the go-between, when there are technical issues that need input they reach out and even ombudsman issues i seem to get roped into.
Generally it is a smattering of each allowing you to roll from one onto another or finish one and have a little relaxation before the next thing comes.
I maintain my composure and focus but some days you get slammed continually from all directions and just want to tell everyone they are not nearly as important as they think they are, their issues are not really that desperate or severe and i only do this for the money not for this "rapport" you believe i have establish with you.
I relate. BUT its Friday night. I am heading home and joining to invest in some bourbon and chill the fuck out
