Michael Flynn called someone identified in court records only as "a senior official of the Presidential Transition Team" at Trump's Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach with other members of the presidential transition team.
Flynn asked "what, if anything, to communicate to the Russian ambassador about the U.S. sanctions," according to the court records. Immediately after that phone call, Flynn called the Russian ambassador and asked him not to "escalate the situation" in response to the sanctions, according to the court records.

Russia's Putin announces his country will not retaliate, a message that the ambassador also relayed to Flynn, according to Flynn's guilty plea in the federal case against him. Trump later praises Putin in a tweet.

As part of security clearance, he is required to report meetings with foreign officials such as the one he'd had with the Russian lawyer, Veselnitskaya, in Donald Trump Jr.'s office at Trump Tower.
