All this ACLU crap about protecting the privacy of people with mental health problems falls in the face of the importance of mentally ill people not having easy and legal access to firearms in my opinion.
The database should be as complete as possible otherwise too many people will slip through the net.
I think we also have to seriously investigate why people go on these gun rampages in the first place, it seems to be largely fuelled by alienation, frustration and a thirst for vengeance on society as a whole.
We need to punish the French, ignore the Germans and forgive the Russians - Condoleezza Rice.

Its a sad state of affairs when you feel the need to arm yourself with a pistol in order to go to your kids school to watch them perform in case some fucked up nutter armed to the teeth is going show up and start blazing away at everyone indiscriminately.
After Dunblane we banned handguns and so far, touch wood, no more school massacres. We even had to look closely at shotgun ownership after that nutcase went on the rampage in Cumbria a few years ago.

I just completed my investigation. They do it because they are mentally disturbed.
The mindset that we can treat crazy people with medication and societal inclusion therapy is completely wrong in most cases. These individuals belong inpatient - likely for a lifetime. Unfortunately there are not enough facilities or professionals to care for them, and there is significant reluctance to move in that direction again.

I agree with you, we need more Broadmoors all this “care in the community” shit is to me just that, shit.
There was a case of a young woman in the UK who had a severe case of paranoid schizophrenia she was released from a secure unit even though she told the doctors she was afraid she would hurt someone if she was set free in the community. The day she was released she rang the police and told them “I am a dangerous schizophrenic and I am going to hurt someone unless I am taken into custody” they told her there was nothing they could do.
An hour later police were called to the scene of an elderly woman who had been viciously stabbed and slashed to death sitting on the kerb with a kitchen knife she had bought from a corner shop was the young woman who had earlier rang the police warning them about her.
She is now locked up indefinitely in a secure mental health unit too little too late.

Still don't know how Zawahri got the gun, but lots of new details emerging.
He was fascinated with semi-automatics, according to an unnamed family member who says the family didn't know what to do about it (and doesn't understand where Zawahri got the money for a gun).
Back in 2006 as a juvenile, Zawahri told a classmate that he wanted to kill some students at his high school. The classmate told a teacher. The teacher called police. Police went to the home and found that Zawahri was making explosives. Off to the psych unit he went. Unfortunately, he was released shortly thereafter which puzzled the teacher. Puzzles me too. Wonder what the conditions of release were?
Aside from the fact that he didn't have a partner in crime, this is a hell of a lot like Columbine. In both cases, other students reported the odd behavior and threats, either short-term or no steps were taken, bombs and guns were involved (and fire too for Zawahri)...
How can a very similar situation with red flags waving everywhere go down years later? I really want to understand the circumstances here that allowed that to happen.
If it turns out that Zawahri used a straw purchaser or bought his gun(s) at a gun show without being subject to a background check, it'll be even more like Columbine.
Discouraging that we, as a society, apparently aren't learning as we go. Or, the laws aren't allowing us to invoke serious preventative measures when flags are raised. Not much good to have laws that are simply after-the-fact punitive; kinda hard to punish dead guys or bring their victims back to life.

Something has to be done about so called gun shows, the fact any nut job can go to one and walk out with assault weapons and ammo is ridiculous.
Also people who are disturbed enough to talk about killing people need to be locked up for their own and other peoples safety.

LE is still investigating how the shooter got the mail order parts to assemble the AR15. He also dropped this old Army Colt during his rampage; it wasn't used in the shootings.

California's strict gun control laws didn't prevent mentally ill-documented Zawahri from getting around them, somehow. Whoever ordered/supplied parts and guns to Zawahri is likely going down hard, imo. IF that person or persons can be traced.
While LE continues to investigate, the city of Santa Monica is trying to address the root of the problem at a societal level with a holistic program. Can't hurt; may help.
Santa Monica city and school officials announced a new approach to youth and family violence in the wake of a shooting rampage in which six people died. The plan, Cradle to Career is a holistic approach to a the violence problem involving city and school and college officials and more than 40 community groups.
“What we’re talking about is a societal issue, a community issue, and it’s an issue that’s going to take a collective approach to support students in need and families in need,” said Sandra Lyon, superintendent of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District
In addition to preventing the national issue of gun violence, the initiative aims to remind the public of the need for mental health services and the counseling for people 18 and older.
Cradle to Career aims to "replace the school-to-prison pipeline,".
