A former undercover police officer has claimed he was ordered to infiltrate the Stephen Lawrence campaign in 1993 the Guardian has reported.
Peter Francis told the newspaper and channel 4s Dispatches program he posed as an anti racism campaigner ina hunt for “disinformation” to use against those criticising police.
The aim was to smear the dead teenagers family he said.
Scotland Yard refused to confirm or deny the account.
19 year old Stephen Lawrence was stabbed to death in a racially motivated attack in south London at a bus stop in 1993.
It took years to bring the perpetrators to justice but two men were finally given life sentences for the murder in 2012.
An investigation into the case concluded that the Metropolitan police were “institutionally racist”.
