But, I'll get back to what you initially said. I trust the LE and FBI data-keeping and reviewers to be good enough to use their statistics for my novice general interest purposes. I understand that you don't for whatever your reasons and purposes -- all clear here.

That interests me but I guess it's a whole other topic. Why people do the bad things they do, things we would never even contemplate, not only do them but take pleasure in doing so.

It's disturbing, yet fascinating.

Vann is looking to be a bonafide serial killer and he seems anxious to talk. Maybe he'll shed some light on why he did what he did.

I think one of the challenges in understanding serial killers is that they often don't understand themselves what makes them want to do it. And, they like to have ultimate power over people, so they often lie and withhold information that they know others are desperate to obtain.

Some analysts think abusive childhoods cause serial killers to take pleasure in dominating and killing others -- a built-up desire to exert power and exact a kind of revenge/payback. Other researchers think there's a biological problem with serial killers' brains. So far though, none of the behavioral theories or brain scan studies of known serial killers has produced anything that can be validated as causing or primarily contributing to a desire to inflict pain and kill others.

Vann Charged with Two Murders -- Pleads 'Not Guilty'

Vann, 43, a convicted sex offender, has been charged with murder in the deaths of Anith Jones, 35 (third from left), and Afrikka Hardy, 19 (far left). Both women were strangled.

Vann has not yet been charged with the murders of Teaira Batey, 28 (second from left) or Kristine Williams, 36 (far right). The other three sets of remains found in the homes to which Vann led police remain unidentified.

Shackled and wearing gray-and-black prison stripes, Vann appeared sleepy, as if sedated, and often had his eyes closed. He told Lake County Magistrate Judge Kathleen Sullivan he understood the charges against him, and that he would not retain a private attorney but will be represented by a public defender, Matthew Fech.

Vann, who served five years in prison in Texas and was released in 2013, refused to speak or even acknowledge his name during his first court hearing a week ago, and the judge warned that he could be charged with contempt. Although Vann had been cooperative with police before last week's hearing, he gave the judge the silent treatment reportedly because he was upset about the presence of media at the hearing and because the hearing was held at the jail instead of the courthouse.

Judge Sullivan reissued a gag order on the case today. We're not gonna hear much regarding evidence outside of the courthouse on this one.

Vann's next court hearing is on Jan. 9.
