R.I.P. Dick Van Patten
#1
Dick Van Patten, the star of TV’s Eight is Enough, has died. He was 86.

The cause of death was complications due to diabetes, his rep confirmed to EW. Patten died at Saint John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif.

“I am sorry to report this sad news,” his publicist Jeff Ballard said. “He was the kindest man you could ever meet in life. A loving family man. They don’t make them like him anymore.” Ballard added, “His family will not be doing any press at this time.”

While Van Patten first rose to fame as family dad Tom Bradford on the 1977-81 hit show Eight is Enough, he had been acting since he was a child, first appearing on Broadway at age 7. He went on to appear on Broadway 27 more times.

He also starred in several films, including the Mel Brooks spoof vehicles Space Balls and Robin Hood Men in Tights. The regularly working actor last appeared on the small screen in a guest role on Hot in Cleveland in 2011.

He is survived by his wife, actress Pat Van Patten, and the couple’s three sons: Nels, Jimmy, and Vincent.

Hot D is way cuter than that. I think Hot D more resembles Sofia Vergara or Sofia resembles her.

Agreed. I think it's the hair that reminds me of a few pictures she's posted.

My cousin had the biggest crush on Vince Van Patten and used to tape his Tiger Beat posters on her wall.

He's actually held up well.

My brother, while working as a lifeguard at one of the Valley's premier resorts had a funny Van Patten story.

It seems they would buy a boatload of resort clothes from the gift shop and then return them all, after wearing them all week!

Management felt pressured to accommodate these celebrities at the tune of $5,000 - $8,000 every time they visited.

I guess they liked to travel light . . .

Word was they were lousy tippers, too.
