OLD?
#1

Why is old often considered an insult?

I was just reading about a cat fight between a couple of those "housewives" and they were throwing the term old out there like it was a dagger.

Is our society such that old means worthless?

Because no one wants to get old. Or look old. Age isn't something a person can control. So if you think I'm old at 50 so be it. I think it's all about your attitude.

Absolutely right, you're as old as you "make" yourself feel.

There are times I feel like 80, and then there are times I feel like 20.
The trick is to get to always feel like somewhere in the middle of your age! hah

Our society always seems to be youth oriented. Mainly because many of today's youths have no respect what so ever for their elders! They have no use for them.

In other countries, elders are revered, and asked for their wisdom, and guidance, not so much in this country.

I know my mom HATED to be asked if she wanted a Senior discount in stores. She did not like being considered old. But with her, at the time she knew she had a terminal illness and would not live more than a few more years. I think she still felt it was rushing things.
I have an acquaintance, age 70 who wears her hair the shade of red in the emotes over to the left of where we type our messages
The_Villagers That shade. She think it makes her look younger. NOPE.
Me, on the other hand, embrace the fact that I am 4 years from retirement. I say bring it on. Yes, I have aches and pains now and then, but everything sure beats the alternative.
People just hate the feeling they are no longer young and "beautiful". I have seen many attractive older people...men and women.'

Unfortunately yes. It's the same with being called fat. People think they're insulting me and think I'm worthless. But I've made my peace with being fat and find it funny instead. It's not like its easy to fight my genetics and 40 years of ingrained poor lifestyle and diet choices.

I blame Antiques Roadshow.

They have proven that just because something is old, it is not necessarily valuable.

America needs a Sotheby's attitude . . . not PBS indoctrination.

The other day I was waiting on an appt and my phone died. I was stuck flipping thru the only available magazines, Cosmo and People. Number of articles on how to be stronger, wiser, and more confident as a woman? Zero. Number of articles on beauty secrets, sex trick to please a man and celebrity gossip? 8 billion. The female of the species is her own frequent worst enemy.
Thank god I am oblivious to the opinions of others while caught in the blinding splendor of my own cleverness.

I hope I am never, evah, viewed as a typical female. I will be so goddamn insulted. It would rank up there with being called stupid.

It's sad, it really is. If I want to learn to be stronger, wiser and more confident the only option available out there for us women is National Geographic. You men on the other hand have several self improvement magazines like Maxim and Esquire with their barely legal cover girls and ads for Viagra. It's a shame.

The thing is, men are blessed with an incredibly large capacity for self delusion so we don't need nearly as much encouragement. We already think we're awesome even if it isn't true.

Maybe "old" should be changed to the "o-word".

It's all about context. I admire OTD a lot and the fact that she made her username Older Than Dirt? Take THAT you stupid bitches flinging it around like it's an insult. We need more women who laugh in the face of aging and don't give a crap about what some stupid "young" punk might think.

We're all older than millions of others. And one day, they'll be "old" too provided they live long enough.

Eventually the market will shift even more toward all those aging Baby Boomers (provided we have money to spend).

Agreed.

Old isn't old like it used to be back in the day so there is a little progress, very little, but progress just the same.

I ruptured my Achilles the other day playing hoops, so, yes, that is a sign I'm getting old.

Holy shit, that's awful! So painful, huh. I'm sorry to read that, MS.

I'll see if anyone wants to send you a boob shot to ease your discomfort.
