How would you react to this?

I agree he deserved an ass kicking if he was holding up a sign that said "will work for food" or "anything helps, god bless". But if he was just walking around looking for money for drugs or booze or whatever then it's pretty evident he doesn't want anyone's crappy leftovers and it's offensive to even offer it. If he's not asking for food then either make a decision to give him a buck or not without judgment, but to go back and give him a plate of your leftovers because you personally feel it's better than buying drugs or booze is belittling. And then to smash it in his face when he gets pissy? Well congratulations for harassing bums, hopefully you feel good about yourself.

Your son is a little naive to expect the guy to be gracious and thankful. He should have drove off and told the kids, "See, that's why you never give anything to bums." As Sally said, you should expect "homeless" to want money... not actual assistance, food, a kind gesture, or help. However, I don't think offering someone food is belittling, especially if that person is out begging people for money. Begging for money is belittling. But yeah, if you offer the guy drugs, you'd be better off than offering him food.

I also don't think that exchange is half as bad as harassing bums. Shoving food in a guy's face is downright genteel compared to the derision and abuse some streetfolk receive. It's a hard gig that makes people mean and untrusting. He probably did think your son would poison the food. There are people that legitimately think killing bums is a social service. Lucky the situation didn't turn out worse, and goes to show there's always something you can still learn.

Yeah, I think so too. In general, I think men are much more sensitive than women too and I think women find it easier to blow things off than men are able to, men are more emotional.

FFS...belittling a bum and offending him by offering him food. Give me a fucking break. Belittling or offending an actual homeless person that needed help is a different story, but my guess is that most homeless people wouldn't have slapped it out of his hand and told him to fuck off in the first place. Maybe the asshole should have just said no thanks, I really need some money or just taken the plate, said thank you and chucked it in the trash as soon as they drove away.

Belittling a bum...wtf................

Well, aussie and CN nearly had simultaneous heart attacks a couple years back when I said I offered nice packaged restaurant leftovers to a hungry homeless person camped outside of a restaurant.

You see........if I weren't such an insensitive and condescending asshole, I would have brought the man home, given him a shower and a hand-job, rented him a tux, solicited a limousine, and escorted him to the Ritz for a 5-star gourmet dinner and a fabulous bottle of bubbly.

Since I was schooled on those charitable requirements right here at Mock, .......I've simply turned away in shame when approached by hungry homeless people. However, I'm saving up and hope to be able to look one in the eye and and make an appropriate charitable gesture sometime before end of year 2019 .

Do you remember what thread that was? I can't remember what I said, but I remember agreeing with you and now I'm saying it's offensive to give bums food unless they ask for it. I feel like I pulled a Trump.

You're not really pulling a Trump.

You did think it was weird to offer leftovers to the homeless, but didn't think it was weird when the homeless were outside of the restaurant asking for food or food money.

And, you were very consistent about it not being weird at all to take good leftover food home to finish later, no matter how many times aussie tried to shame us about that disgusting practice. http://mockforums.net/showthread.php?tid=10843

There is a homeless lady that sits outside the shop I used to work at. She could be anyone's grandma. Weird how we train our mind to almost be okay with a homeless man, but see this woman who is obviously not a prostitute just sitting there night after night, day after day.
I went up and talked to her. She told me her name, she told me about her life. I told her about mine. Next time I went to talk to her and I brought food, for both of us. I didn't just give her food and leave, I sat there and ate with her.
She never has asked people for things. But people offer her stuff all the time. She said she was sort of sleeping one night and some people left a half eaten pizza next to her.
It was kind of funny actually to hear her say that. I mean she is grateful, but if anyone is paying attention to her and her life and what she needs it is not difficult to find something she would like or could use.
We expect to just throw some food or money at someone to feel better about ourselves, when sometimes all someone wants is someone to talk to.
Now FQ said "Of course the person was panhandling" well the story didn't tell that in the beginning, and how were we to know that.
There is a guy that sits on the corner, people have offered him jobs and he tells them to go away. So you move on, don't waste time on someone if you can't help them.
But find someone who genuinely needs something, they are there.

The thing with homelessness is that there is a high percentage of those living with mental illness. I wouldn't approach someone unless I was with an organisation or doing organised charity work. You don't know the person and you don't know what you are approaching. You don't have the skills to assess someone who may be hallucinating and see you as a threat. It's risky.

Even if I see a patient and they recognise me, I will say hello, but that's it.

Why not. Anyway it appears it would be considered tame compared to some other topics around here.

Adam Carolla: The Man Show, Loveline, comedian radio talk show host. Anyway he claims that he will take a group out to dinner and he will pay for the meal but then when everyone is gathering up "their" leftovers he says, "oh no, those are mine, I paid for the meal, those are my leftovers"
