Rochester, NY judge apparently feels above law
#1
This soon to be former city judge has been spending the last few months showing utter contempt for the system she had been charged to oversee. She had a DWI charge, was made to not drink and drive, and had the breath ignition monitor put into her car, which she often ignored (once aledgedly having one of her under aged kids blow into the device). She had been suspended with pay, and missed a court date as she was on some 3 month visit to some monestary overseas, and initially refused to come back for a court dat. Today she was forced back on a bench warrant, was arrested on contempt charges, and was seen laughing and giggling as she left the courthouse in cuffs..to go to jail

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An embattled City Court judge was escorted Monday from judicial chambers in handcuffs.
Rochester court deputies and city police officers executed a bench warrant issued for Judge Leticia Astacio's arrest last week after she missed a Tuesday court appearance related to an August drunken-driving conviction.
Astacio, a Rochester City Court judge, smiled and said hello to the gaggle of reporters waiting for her at the fifth floor elevator bank of the Monroe County Hall of Justice where officers marched her off to be processed at the nearby Rochester Public Safety Building. She returned later to the courthouse for an arraignment before Judge Stephen Aronson of Canandaigua City Court, who issued the warrant and is overseeing her drunken-driving case.
He ordered her held without bail in Monroe County Jail until a Thursday hearing. The reason she missed her court appearance last week was because she had been living in a temple with monks in the mountains of Thailand since May 3, she had texted to her lawyer.

Sounds like she may have some mental health issues. That's some weird shit she was doing. How the hell did she get elected.

Damned if I know. Affirmative Action or something. She has acted this way throughout the process

Rochester City Court Judge Leticia Astacio has fired her lawyer.
Ed Fiandach, her lawyer, said he was dismissed via a text message from Astacio’s sister late Monday night and that he learned of the development when he looked at his phone Tuesday morning.
“I feel sad,” Fiandach said. “I had a personal connection to her.”
Fiandach, a high-profile lawyer who specializes in drunken driving defense, recalled once having a case in front of Astacio and her calling him to the bench to tell him, “I’m only here because of you.”
He said she went on to explain that a lecture he gave years earlier to her class at Irondequoit High School, when she was a student there, inspired her to become a lawyer.

Just an update on this chick: she rescinded the firing of her lawyer but was given a beat down by the presiding judge, ordered remanded to jail to await the next phase of her punishment and sits there now. So she fired him again. I feel bad for her, she's a mess and a half. That's why they call it addiction...

I have a very hard time feeling sorry for anyone with such self inflicted injuries. Having more than a little experience in seeing someone destroy themselves its frustrating and all that. However it still comes down to their making very bad decisions and feeling sorry for themselves and stacking more bad decisions on top of the rest. They are enabled by other people feeling sorry for them and trying to shield them from the consequences of their actions, fuckem, let them deal with the consequences the way we have to.

I have occasionally shared that view, and I'm not an addictive personality myself. But I have seen people absolutely ruin themselves with no support or enabling from others, and addiction is a harsh mistress. I try these days to be a little more "there but for the grace of God" in my approach. Demonizing somebody for not being as strong/lucky/able as you mentally is kind of a heartless way to do things IMO. Age old argument of philosophers: which is man's default nature? Altruism or egotism? Preservation of self or preservation of society?

Hard to say, for some its one and for others its something else.
I agree with the Grace of God stance completely. I don't mean to sound demonizing about them, I just have become so jaded in my views having seen so much of this its hard to give a shit what happens to them as I have enough on my own plate. I don't wish them harm, I just wont be sucked into anyone else's self inflicted drama anymore

Like I said, I have occasionally shared your views and when I sense someone is just using my goodwill I am quick to cut that shit right off. I even swore off being a white knight altogether for a while, it just didn't stick. It is in my nature I think. Just ain't wired any other way, even when I know it won't go noticed or appreciated.
