Did you grow up with pets?
It's up to us, Mockers, to talk MS into letting his kids have a pet. I know there was a time they wanted a dog. Their pleas fell on deaf ears. For shame, MS.
I see your daughter wants a cat now. They are probably the easiest domestic animal to care for. They don't require the attention a dog does. Dogs are pack animals, cats, not so much.

My wife's brother has been on us for years to get a dog, so we are used to feeling pressure.

Dogs are good for kids as long as you have not lost control of your kids and allowed devices to be their friends and babysitters.
I never had a cat, know lots of people that did, liked some cats, others not so much. Duchess is right, most cats are pretty low maintenance. SOme seem to get off on scratching the shit out of furniture and knocking shit off shelves and rubbing their ass on your toothbrush. A dog you can teach to stay off the furniture, cats...no
DO not Ever feed a cat milk, they can peel wall paper when they use the cat box, which you do NOT want in your bedroom

Yeah I grew up with a dog, three cats, and then 2 other cats.
If you get a pet make sure the kid helps take care of it. Luckily for my cats I was an animal lover and a big softie. I was the only one of my brothers that cared enough to feed the cats. Of course I was rewarded by having the cats share my pillow when I slept at night.
If you get a dog make sure to keep your toys out of reach. They eat everything...including a Colonel Decker Star Trek the Motion Picture action figure and glow in the dark crayons (the poop looked like UFOs according to the neighbors).
