"I THINK I DID IT" -- MURDER OF LAUREN PHELPS, NC
#1
We've heard murders blamed on Twinkies, anti-depressants, booze, sleep-walking, and medical marijuana. But I don't think I've ever heard the 'cough medicine defense' before now.

Matthew Phelps of Raleigh was charged with murder Friday after he made an emergency call. When police responded, authorities say his 29-year-old Sunday school teacher wife Lauren Ashley-Nicole Phelps was dead from stab wounds. RIP.

In the 911 call, Phelps -- a lawn worker and aspiring pastor who graduated from Creek Baptist Bible College in Kentucky -- told the operator he took more cold medicine then he should have and woke up after his dream with blood all over him and a knife on the bed he shared with his wife of one year.

Matthew Phelps is heard on the call saying, "I think I killed my…." When a dispatcher asks him what happened, he says, "I had a dream, and then I turned on the lights and she's dead on the floor."

"I have blood all over me and there's a bloody knife on the bed and I think I did it." Toward the end of the seven-minute 911 call, Matthew Phelps started sobbing, saying his wife didn't deserve this.

Phelps claimed the medication he took was Coricidin, a cough and cold medication, "because I know it can make you feel good and sometimes I can't sleep at night."

Coricidin contains dextromethorphan and chlorpheniramine, which experts say when taken in high doses – which is typically a result of recreational use – can cause euphoria, agitation, psychoses and dissociative phenomena.

Phelps will appear in court tomorrow; he is being held without bail. I'm curious as to what the investigators will find when they start digging into this guy.

I don't know guys. Could be that Phelps is a violent gamer.

Or, maybe he was abusing the cough and cold medicine and lost his shit.

Or, maybe he positioned himself as a good Christian in public and his wife found out he was a raging porn addict and/or adulterer in private.

Hopefully investigators can put the pieces together quickly. In the meantime..............he isn't going anywhere.

Wouldn't that be nice?
Man, what a shame, such a pretty girl.
Some people get way weird behind some medications, I have seen it in people that were taking more than they should but not chugging the stuff.
Most of them were a little on the weird side to start with though

A man who allegedly told a 911 dispatcher he took too much cough medicine and awoke to find his wife slain appeared in court today on first-degree murder charges.

"I think I did it," Matthew Phelps is heard saying on the call.

The victim's family members attended this afternoon's hearing, reported the Raleigh News & Observer.

Phelps appeared wearing an orange and white striped prison jumpsuit and listened quietly as a judge told him he could spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole or face the death penalty if convicted, the paper reports.

After the hearing, Phelps' lawyer Joseph Blunt Cheshire V told the paper that the effects of the cold medicine on his client would be "an interesting subject of inquiry."

He called Lauren Phelps' death and Matthew Phelps' arrest "a very tragic situation" and asked that the public withhold judgment until more is known.

"There's a whole lot more to this story that will be told in the future," he told the paper.

This guy's story sets off my bullshit detector.
Thank god I am oblivious to the opinions of others while caught in the blinding splendor of my own cleverness.

Yeah, mine too. I'm sure his attorney is right; there's a whole lot more to this story that will come out in the future.

Lauren's loved ones used only her maiden name in her obituary. No mention of her suspect husband whatsoever. The couple had been married less than one year before he "thinks he killed her". They were both apparently Star Wars fanatics and had a light saber duel at their wedding ceremony (weird, but whatever).

I don't like his face; looks like a phony to me. That's not evidence of anything, of course, and I might be wrong. I just doubt Phelps is what he presented himself to be. Lauren, on the other hand, seemed completely genuine and maybe a little naive.

I wonder how her family and friends felt about Matthew before the murder?

Lauren Hugelmaier was memorialized yesterday at the same church where they were married.

From her obituary:
Lauren was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church where she loved working with the Children's and Youth Ministries. She was a 2007 graduate of Swain County High School and later graduated from Appalachian State University.

Lauren could always be heard saying that her nephews were one of the most important parts of her life and that she was one proud "auntie nini" followed closely by her love for her special fur baby, Cooper Hugelmaier.

She was an Auditor with Quintiles, but one of her passions was her personal business with Scentsy. Lauren was always full of life and her big smile will be greatly missed by everyone she knew.

He was apparently living a double life. I wasn't able to see his page before it became private, but I heard there was some really dark, gruesome, disturbing shit on there.

I read somewhere that he was raised by grandparents, so I'm curious as to how that came about, his childhood, etc. I haven't seen or heard anything about that yet.

I think the cough syrup story is BS and he killed her because he wanted to be free of her.

Almost 125 knife wounds. Jesus Christ. I hope Lauren died quickly and some of those wounds were post-mortem.

GUILTY

Aspiring pastor Matthew Phelps' appearance sure has changed since he was arrested for stabbing his wife Lauren 123 times last year.

[Image: 4811588-6286349-Phelps_pictured_in_court...852128.jpg]
His story about not realizing or remembering killing his wife because he was hopped up on cough medicine wasn't selling.

So, in exchange for prosecutors taking the death penalty off the table, Phelps pleaded guilty to Lauren's murder earlier this month.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.  Good.

His motives:  he didn't like Lauren laying down rules over his excessive spending, he was cheating on his wife and she threatened to leave him, he was obsessed with American Psycho, and (according to him) drinking and drugs took him to a dark place.

Phelps said he was sorry at his sentencing hearing.  Lauren's dad essentially responded with a big 'fuck you shit bag' (my paraphrase).

^^^^No way does he look to be capable of murder. Let alone the rage it would take to penetrate someone over 100 times with a knife. People can change right before your eyes.
